Recently, I had the pleasure of helping out small animal rescue, Ohio Pet Sanctuary by photographing their adoptable animals. While most people think of rescue pets as dogs and cats, this rescue provides medical care and a temporary home for other small animals in need, such as rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, bearded dragons, birds, and cats, as well as other small animals and small reptiles. At their facility, located at 8018 Beechmont Avenue in Anderson Township, they also sell food and other pet supplies with proceeds going towards helping the pets in their care.

Ohio Pet Sanctuary was founded in September 2012 by Madison Schleibaum, a registered veterinary technician. The inspiration for starting the rescue was her adopted rescue ferrets, Garak and Kes. Sadly, Garak passed away from cancer in October 2012; however, his legacy will live on as a ferret playground for residents of Ohio Pet Sanctuary is planned in his honor.

If you are looking for a small pet of your own, look no further than Ohio Pet Sanctuary. Here are the animals I photographed for them, some of whom have since been adopted:

If you would like to adopt from, shop with, donate to, or volunteer with Ohio Pet Sanctuary, contact them via email at info [at] Their facility is open from NOON – 6:00 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sundays; they are closed Mondays and Thursdays. You can read more about Ohio Pet Sanctuary on their website and in the great feature article about them in CityBeat.

Giving back to pets in need of homes is important to me. Every animal deserves to have a home and they have a harder time finding one if they can’t be seen. That is what I and my fellow-artist members of HeARTs Speak around the world do every day, we work towards the goal that no shelter pet remains unseen so that they have their chance to find a home. All the images you see in this blog post use the adoption logo from HeARTs Speak.

Another way I am giving back to pets in need is through proceeds from my book, Rescue Dogs: Portraits and Stories, currently available for pre-order on Amazon. It features color images of rescue dogs and tells their stories of rescue and adoption. Proceeds from the book will benefit Recycled Doggies in Cincinnati, Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, and HeARTs Speak.
