Our year of covering chapters from the book “The Visual Toolbox: 60 Lessons for Stronger Photographers” by David DuChemin for our professional pet photography Project 52 blog posts is coming to a close as we are in the homestretch of the year with Week 49. Our topic this week is “get closer.” If we had a macro lens, we could use it, but our task was to get closer to our subject and see differently. This week, I chose my cat, Diana, as my subject.

Diana is a beautiful tortoiseshell cat that  I adopted after fostering her and her kittens. Diana loves to hang out with me and the dogs and, in fact, I think she sometimes thinks she’s just one of the dogs. Since she isn’t quite as cooperative a subject as either Mr. Bojangles or Paco, I had to take pictures of her when and where she was relaxed and comfortable. So, while she was lounging on the dog/cat lounge in the living room, I gathered my equipment and decided to get closer to her.

The first thing I wanted to do was take a picture of her fur focusing on all the different colors it contains, especially the fur on her stomach, which has larger patches of varying colors.

Since I was so close to her, I could also focus on her paw and the different textures provided by her fur, pads, and claws.

And also by getting closer to my subject, Diana, I could get a closer image of her face where you could see the different colors provided by her fur, as well as her gorgeous golden eyes.

Next, let’s get closer to what Darlene with Pant the Town Pet Photography, serving MA and NH, has for us, and then head around the rest of the blog circle until you end up back here.
